JR MEYERS, Founder & CEO
After a successful career as one of the top producers at a noteworthy trading company, JR followed his entrepreneurial spirit and founded Totem Steel in 1998. In the years since its founding, JR has led Totem from a small start-up with limited capital, to a robust international steel and wood products trading company with access to capital in excess of $100M. In February of 2015 JR entered into a partnership with TATA International to continue the growth of the steel business. Not content just building a successful business; JR continues to give back through his leadership as an Officer of Youn Presidents Organization (YPO) and now World Presidents Organization (WPO), as well as serving on a number of boards of charitable organizations. Totem, together with The Meyers Foundation is a significant contributor to local charities and a recognized leader among local companies in giving back to the community.
LEONARD BRITTNER, General Manager
Leonard believes in efficiency. Having started in the hardwood lumber business in 1999, he has seen major shifts in technology, product offerings and global demand. One thing he knows to be true is that the market is ever changing. He strives to ensure Totem is at the forefront of technology, that they are constantly looking to new product lines and they are leaders when it comes to the environmental issues relevant to trade in wood products. Leonard started his career with one of the country’s largest hardwood suppliers. After 5 years he left to start his own business and 4 years later in 2008 his company was acquired by Totem. Since then, he has developed markets in the U.S., Europe, Asia & Caribbean, focusing on both domestic and imported hardwoods. If you can’t find him in the office, your best bet is to try the golf course, one of Mt. Hood’s ski areas or one of Oregon’s many beautiful bodies of water.
TREVOR SARAZIN, Director of Operations, Mats Division
Born and raised in the Portland, OR, Trevor comes from a close knit family built around business, ethics and the appreciation of a nice glass of wine or whiskey. After plans to become a stock broker with a degree in business and economics from Oregon State University and working for Smith Barney for a short while, Trevor found the lumber business to have all the perks of a stock market without all the hoops to constantly jump through. Taking a job with a large trading firm in 2006 led Trevor down the rabbit hole of lumber wholesaling, eventually landing him at a desk trading crane mats when they were still relatively unheard of. After four years, he made the move to Buckeye Pacific in 2010 to build a new mat program from scratch. After spending five years growing Buckeye, he once again decided to move in 2015 to join Totem and enjoy the benefits of working with a closer knit group and focus on building yet another mat division even more directed towards his perceived industry strengths. When his loud voice isn’t annoying those around him in the office, he’s usually either on the golf course, out on the river or at a music festival
KAREN McCONKEY, VP of Finance
Having over 30 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, Karen is an incredible resource for our team. With an understanding of financial reporting, treasury management, managing audits, and human resources along with implementing and maintaining accounting and control systems, Karen is a wealth of knowledge. Karen has a B.S. in Accounting from Portland State University and after having spent 10 years in the high-tech sector and 3 years in hospitality, Karen joined Totem in 2004. Karen and her husband of over 25 years love get out to hike, golf, wine taste, RV and especially root on their Seahawks! If that’s not enough, she’s also a Certified Barbeque Judge for the Kansas City Barbeque Society.
DEIRDRE MURFEE, Administrative Manager
As both the Totem Forest Logistics Specialist and the Accounts Payable Rep for Totem Forest and Totem Mats, Deirdre Murfee wears many hats. However, her sharp eye for detail and background in business ensure that operations run smoothly and efficiently. A graduate of the University of Portland, Deirdre holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration; her ability to think on her feet and improve processes as she goes makes her an asset to the Portland team. Outside of work, she volunteers for Portland’s Neighborhood Emergency Response Team and the Portland Animal Welfare team. She is an avid baker, but her hobbies also include crochet, learning languages, and hiking with her husband and son.
KELLY REED, Administrative Manager
With approximately 15 years in the wood products industry both domestically and internationally, Kelly is excited to bring her experience to Totem. Kelly has a B.S. in Business Management from University of Phoenix and is knowledgeable in inventory management, A/R, A/P and customer service. In her free time she is the Commissioner of her Fantasy Football League and enjoys running, sampling Oregon’s fine Micro Brews as well as spending time with friends and family.
